A small but growing number of people with previous marijuana convictions on Friday received preliminary approval to operate cannabis businesses in New Jersey, one of several signs that “diverse and inclusive market is taking shape,” according to the Cannabis Regulatory Commission.

During its monthly meeting, the commission announced that 247 aspiring cannabis business owners with prior convictions have earned at least conditional approvals to grow, manufacture or sell recreational weed. These applicants include one who now holds an annual license, eight who have successfully converted their conditional license to an annual license, and 153 others with hold conditional or provisional licenses.
